Kath. Pfarrkirche hll. Peter und Paul

The Catholic parish church of Saints Peter and Paul stands high on the northern edge of Stixneusiedl in Trautmannsdorf an der Leitha. It overlooks the village and the surrounding flatlands of Lower Austria. The church belongs to the deanery of Bruck an der Leitha and is protected as a listed monument. Parts of an older chapel survive in the tower basement. The present building was erected in 1786 during the Joseph II era. The church is a simple rectangular hall with a three-sided choir and a four-storey east tower. A cemetery lies to the north, entered from the village by a stone staircase with reused baroque pedestals dated 1632. The exterior walls are plain, lit by segment-arched windows under a tiled roof. A gabled porch projects from the south wall, and a single-storey sacristy is attached to the choir. Inside, the nave and choir share a flat ceiling and a west gallery on wooden columns. The high altar came from St Stephen’s Cathedral in Vienna in 1885 and is said to include the slab of Sebastian Leberwurst from 1642. The double retable is crowned by angels by Matthias Steinl, and the main painting, Michael Rottmayr’s St Michael casting out the devil on copper, dates after 1708. The organ was built by Karl Neusser in 1893, and a bell by Franz Zechenter bears the date 1716.
