Schloss Nussdorf

Schloss Nußdorf stands in Nussdorf, a village that belongs to Eberdingen in the Ludwigsburg district of Baden-Württemberg. Built in the 15th or 16th century, it was largely renewed in the 19th century and shows the style of a medieval castle with its rough-hewn stone walls left bare. The complex includes the park’s boundary wall, the old coach house, the former manager’s house and the farm building, all protected as cultural monuments. The site had a predecessor in the 15th century, a castle or fortress with a tower on the north side and farm buildings around a courtyard on the south. A garden covered about one hectare. In 1878 the owner Richard Freiherr von Reischach, Oberhofmeister to Queen Olga of Württemberg, began new farm buildings and a southern tower. Nine years later the main castle was rebuilt by the Stuttgart architects Ludwig Eisenlohr and Carl Weigle. At the same time the Little Castle opposite, a Romanesque building with Gothic and Renaissance details, was completed. In 1888 the present inner courtyard with its cloister was finished and the stables turned into a gardener’s flat, while the grounds were laid out as an English landscape garden. Visitors find a compact medieval-style castle of rough stone, its 19th-century rebuilding still plainly visible. The inner courtyard is surrounded by a cloister with pointed arches, and the Little Castle across the way adds a picturesque touch. The park, once a formal garden, now offers winding paths through lawns and mature trees. The farm buildings and manager’s house remain as part of the protected ensemble, giving a sense of how the estate operated in past centuries.
