Whiteford Lighthouse

Whiteford Lighthouse stands on Whiteford Point, a low rocky shelf at the northern tip of the Gower Peninsula in South Wales. The cast-iron tower rises only a few metres above low-water level, its cylindrical form tapering from a broad base to a narrow lantern. A pitched stone apron surrounds the base, protecting the wooden piles driven into the glacial moraine beneath. The structure was built in 1865 by the Llanelli Harbour and Burry Navigation Commissioners to replace an earlier timber lighthouse of 1854. John Bowen of Llanelli designed the unusual tower, which remains the only wave-swept cast-iron lighthouse of its size in Britain. The lighthouse is notable for its engineering. Eighty-eight wooden piles support the tower, linked by 500 cast-iron plants and bolts, forming a box filled with concrete. The shell consists of 105 curved cast-iron plates, each over 30 millimetres thick, bolted together with iron fastenings weighing nearly a kilogram each. Vertical cracks appeared in the lowest rings during the 1870s, repaired with wrought-iron straps by a local blacksmith named Powell. By 1885, a concrete skirt anchored the base to prevent further movement. The lighthouse once housed two keepers, alternating between Whiteford and Llanelli Harbour. At low tide the tower can be reached on foot across the sands. Though the light was discontinued in 1920 and later relit briefly in the 1980s, the structure remains a navigational mark by day. It is owned by Carmarthenshire County Council and recognised as a Grade II* listed building and Scheduled Ancient Monument. The surrounding Whiteford Sands stretch along the coast, offering views of the Bristol Channel and distant hills. The lighthouse stands as a rare survivor of 19th-century cast-iron construction, a testament to the ingenuity of its builders.
