Evang. Pfarrkirche Knittelfeld

The Bekennerkirche stands in Knittelfeld, a town in the Murtal district of Styria. It is the Lutheran parish church for the city’s small but long-standing Protestant community. The building is listed as a protected monument and belongs to the Evangelical Superintendenture of Styria. The church’s history reflects the struggles of the Reformation in the region. By 1562 Protestant ideas had taken hold, but the Counter-Reformation forced preachers to seek refuge on nearby noble estates. Later, industrial growth and the Los-von-Rom movement brought more Lutherans to the area. Plans for a new church were delayed by the First World War, but in 1935–36 a competition was held and Professor Sepp Letzner of Graz designed the present building. The church has a simple, house-like shape with an off-centre tower that does not rise far above the roofline. Inside, the ceiling steps down to create a basilica without pillars, an open arrangement that influenced later church designs. A single roof covers both the nave and an adjoining hall for parish activities. The interior feels uncluttered, with clear lines and a sense of quiet dignity.
