Shrewsbury Museum and Art Gallery

Shrewsbury Museum and Art Gallery stands in the centre of Shrewsbury, occupying a group of buildings that tell the town’s story across seven centuries. Vaughan’s Mansion, a 13th-century defensive hall house, forms the core of the complex, while the 19th-century Music Hall and Assembly Rooms sit beside a medieval shut and a 20th-century civil defence bunker. The site once housed the town’s fire service, and Fire Office Passage still runs through the buildings to Swan Hill. The museum grew from the 1835 foundation of the Shropshire and North Wales Natural History and Antiquarian Society, which gathered geology, archaeology and art from the region. Donations came from local figures such as Sir Rowland Hill and scientists including Charles Darwin, while excavations at Wroxeter added Roman finds like the Hadrianic Forum Inscription. A stained glass window by Nathalie Hildegarde Liege, unveiled in 2019, reflects the Hall of Rocks and Minerals collection and a 2016 Margaret Agnes Rope exhibition. Visitors enter through the restored theatre spaces that now lead to galleries displaying Roman mosaics, Bronze Age hoards and Caughley porcelain. The Condover Mammoths and Grinshill Rhynchosaur share space with 18th-century views of Coalbrookdale, while the museum’s cafe and visitor information centre sit beside the old police cells. The complex offers a walk through Shrewsbury’s past, from medieval vaults to Victorian assembly rooms and modern displays.
