Schloss Dermbach

Schloss Dermbach stands in the northern part of Dermbach village in Thüringen. It is a three-winged Baroque building arranged around a wide rectangular courtyard. Across the street lies the Franciscan monastery with its imposing church, built at the same time as the palace. The palace began as an administrative centre for the Fulda abbey in 1707. Konstantin von Buttlar added a massive sandstone wall and strong buttresses around the house and its large garden in 1717. After Fulda lost power in 1802, the building passed through several owners until the Free State of Saxony-Weimar-Eisenach took charge in 1815. Later it served as a forest office, police station and youth hostel before becoming a local museum in 1932. Today the restored palace houses the village administration, a library and a registry office. The art and culture association uses the grounds for concerts and festivals, including performances of the Rhönpaulus musical. A medieval fair with a knight’s camp is held on the meadow beside the building.
