Bützow Castle

Schloss Bützow stands in the small town of Bützow within the Rostock district of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Its origins lie in a Slav fortress, later rebuilt as a bishop’s residence for the Schwerin diocese. In 1556 Duke Ulrich of Mecklenburg converted it into a Renaissance palace with a rectangular courtyard. The red-brick walls still show the style of that period. The castle occupies a gentle rise above the Warnow river valley. A moat once surrounded the site, though only traces remain today. The castle’s history as a bishop’s seat gives it special significance in northern Germany. Ulrich’s transformation marked a shift from medieval fortress to Renaissance residence. Archaeologists have found Slavic pottery and coins beneath the foundations. The rectangular plan with four corner towers reflects Italian Renaissance ideas. Bishops and dukes used the castle for administration and hunting parties. Its long service to church and state makes it a recognised monument. Inside, visitors walk through vaulted cellars and grand halls with high ceilings. The courtyard remains the heart of the building, framed by arcades on three sides. Outside, the Warnow valley offers quiet riverside paths and views across meadows. The castle’s red brick contrasts with the green landscape around Bützow. Nearby, the town’s cobbled streets lead to a small market square with cafés. The Warnow river once supplied fish to the castle kitchens.
