Hospitalkirche St. Jakob (Zittau)

The Hospitalkirche St. Jakob in Zittau began as a chapel for a hospital founded around 1290 by the Knights of St John. It stands in the town’s northern edge, near the site of the old hospital buildings. The church itself dates largely from the mid-14th century, when King Charles IV supported its construction. The chapel survived repeated wars and fires, including the Hussite raids, the Thirty Years War and the Seven Years War. In 1721 it was renovated to mark two hundred years since the Reformation in Zittau. A painted tablet still records that work, supervised by the mayor and several leading citizens. Inside, visitors see the plain white walls and simple furnishings of the 18th-century interior. The 1721 renovation left few later changes, so the space still feels close to its medieval character. Outside, the low gabled roof and small bell turret recall the modest scale of a hospital chapel. The surrounding streets are quiet, with only the old hospital gatehouse and a few low buildings remaining from the larger complex.
