Hawkshead Grammar School Museum

The Hawkshead Grammar School Museum sits in the old schoolhouse in the village of Hawkshead. The building dates back to the 16th century and once taught Latin and Greek to boys from local families. Its single classroom and upstairs gallery still hold the feel of a working schoolroom from two centuries ago. The museum keeps the Elizabethan charter of 1585, a set of original desks from 1585 and the 1830s, and the carved initials of William Wordsworth on one desk. Visitors hear a short talk about the school’s past and can join a quiz as they move through the rooms. Large tour groups also gather for guided sessions. Seasonal events fill the calendar with extra talks and activities. The upstairs space shows books from the original library while the main room keeps the layout of a 19th-century classroom. The atmosphere lingers long after visitors leave the quiet village street.
