Bröse memorial

The Brösedenkmal stands in the Krugpark in Brandenburg an der Havel. It is a cast-iron turret in neo-Gothic style, placed on a sandstone pedestal with two steps. The monument was first erected in 1851 near the popular inn Zum Neuen Krug, then moved to the park’s centre in 1985. Its parts were recast in 1985 and restored again in 2018 after damage. The inscription honours Johann Gottfried Bröse, a master chimney sweep and city councillor. Bröse organised the planting of the path to the inn in 1824 and gained permission the next year to turn the area into a park. By 1834 the Krugpark had been completed, thanks to his efforts. The city raised the monument two years after his death, marking his sixty-fifth birthday. Citizens recognised his work on the park and on promenades along old fortifications and Marienberg. Visitors find the turret on a cross-shaped base, topped by a spire-like finial. The sandstone base and iron structure show clear neo-Gothic detailing. Inscriptions on the pedestal name Bröse and recall his contribution. The park itself remains a green centrepiece in the town, with the monument as its focal point.
