Saint Bartholomew Church

The Roman Catholic parish church of Illmitz stands on the village green in the market town of Illmitz, in Burgenland near the Neusiedl am See district. Known as the Church of St Bartholomew, it belongs to the Frauenkirchen deanery in the Diocese of Eisenstadt and is protected as a listed monument. The building replaced an earlier church dedicated to St Martin, which stood on the Kirchsee hill outside the village and was last mentioned in 1299. The present church was begun in 1775 and consecrated in 1792, its single late-baroque nave rising under broad barrel vaults between stepped pilasters. In 1977–78 the architects Klaus Becker and Erich Eberstaller added a modern north aisle, blending old and new without loss of harmony. The square three-storey tower is set into the west gable, its upper stages rising above the roofline. Inside, the high altar of 1658 came from the dissolved Augustinian convent in Eisenstadt, its rich carving still intact. Visitors find a calm interior lit by rounded niche windows, the space divided into three bays by sturdy pilasters. The 1979 organ, built by Rieger Orgelbau with fourteen speaking stops, stands on the modern north side. Outside, the churchyard on the green offers views across the flat Burgenland landscape, the tower marking the centre of the village. The contrast between the 18th-century walls and the clean-lined 20th-century addition gives the building unusual architectural interest.
