Burg Burgberg
The Burgberg ruin stands in the centre of Burgberg, a village in the Black Forest near Königsfeld. It was built in the 12th century as a water castle by the Lords of Burgberg and later enlarged in the 13th century. The fortress once held prisoners from nearby castles such as Bärenberg and Waldau. After passing to Württemberg, it was destroyed during the Thirty Years’ War. What remains today is a striking square keep built of ashlar blocks, rising about fifteen metres. The tower’s high entrance sits six metres above ground, reached by an internal staircase. Only parts of the curtain wall survive, now surrounded by private houses. Visitors see the tall keep standing among modern buildings, its stonework showing the marks of centuries. The quiet village square frames the ruin, giving a sense of how the fortress once dominated the settlement. A few low walls trace the outline of the old bailey. The site offers a clear picture of a medieval fortress reduced to its strongest element.
