Hirschberg

The Hirschberg stands at 1 834 metres in the Bregenzerwald range, overlooking the village of Bizau in Vorarlberg. It is surrounded by the Sienspitze to the north-east, the Diedamskopf to the south-east and the Kanisfluh to the south-west. The Vorsäß settlement of Schönenbach lies to the north-east and can be reached by a toll road from Bizau. The Bregenzer Ach flows through the valley to the north-west of the mountain. The Hirschberg attracts skiers on winter tours and hikers in summer. A walk from the valley station of the old lift takes about three and a half hours to the summit. An alpine nature trail begins at the mountain station of the chairlift. Until 1999 the mountain hosted FIS downhill races and hosted Austrian national championships in 1975 and 1983. Three ski tows once served the sunny plateau, though only the Hüttenlift remains. From the former panoramic restaurant and the lift station there is a wide view across the middle Bregenzerwald. The chairlift has been out of service since 2012, and the summer toboggan run has been removed. The Übungslift at the valley station still operates in winter, run by the local council. A few rope tows remain available for skiers.
