Kammertheater Stuttgart

The Kammertheater Stuttgart is a small performance space inside the Neue Staatsgalerie, an extension of the Staatsgalerie built in the 1980s. The gallery itself was designed by the British architect James Stirling, who created a bold, pink and grey building that opened in 1984. The theatre seats 420 people and hosts short opera, drama and ballet productions. It is one of several venues run by the Staatstheater Stuttgart. The theatre is worth visiting because it offers a more intimate setting than the main opera house. Visitors can see high-quality performances without the large scale of the bigger venues. Stirling’s building is recognised as a key example of postmodern architecture in Germany. The contrast between the theatre’s modern design and the classical art in the Staatsgalerie makes the visit special. Inside, the theatre has a curved stage and tiered seating arranged in a fan shape. The walls are lined with warm wood, and the lighting is soft and adjustable. From the foyer, visitors look out onto the gallery’s striking facade. The whole building sits in a quiet corner of Stuttgart’s city centre, close to other cultural sites.
