Horburg Castle

The ruins of Horburg Castle stand on Etzenbach Height at 680 metres above sea level, near the Etzenbach hamlet of Staufen in the Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald district. The site overlooks the surrounding Black Forest valleys and the nearby town of Staufen. Once a high medieval stronghold, the castle was built to guard an old trade route through the hills. Over centuries the walls crumbled and today only grassy mounds mark where towers once rose. The castle’s name survives in local maps and stories, though nothing of the stonework remains visible. Historians recognise Horburg Castle as part of the Salian-era network of fortifications built in the 11th and 12th centuries. Research published in the 1960 Schau-ins-Land journal describes the site’s layout and finds from early excavations. Later studies in the Salier exhibition monograph place Horburg among the earliest stone castles in the region. The castle’s brief life ended before the 13th century, when newer fortresses replaced it. Its exact origins and fate remain uncertain, adding a quiet mystery to the hilltop. Visitors walk along the Etzenbach Height trail that passes the old castle site. The path offers wide views over the vineyards of Staufen and the Black Forest ridges beyond. A small observation tower, the Etzenbacher Hütte, stands nearby and provides a higher viewpoint. The surrounding beech and spruce woods give the hill a peaceful, green atmosphere. On clear days the Alps appear faintly to the south. The castle’s vanished walls invite imagination rather than inspection, leaving only the landscape to tell its story.
