St Margaretha

The parish church of Vorderthiersee stands on the slope above Thiersee in the village of Vorderthiersee. It belongs to the Diocese of Salzburg and is dedicated to Saint Margaret. The present building, designed by Franz Windhager, was completed in 1967 while keeping the old baroque apse and the 15th-century tower. The church’s tower has round-headed sound windows and a pointed spire. Inside, bronze work includes the tabernacle, the lectern and the door fittings. The baroque statues on the consoles represent Mary Immaculate and saints such as Peter, John the Evangelist, Joachim, George, Florian, Philip, Joseph and Andrew. Michael Werner painted the oil portrait of Saint Margaret in 1860. Visitors find a modern nave lit by windows designed by Albert Birkle in 1968. The old tower and the curved apse remain from earlier centuries. The bronze fixtures and the row of statues give the interior a warm, crafted feel. Outside, the church overlooks the lake and the village below.
