Schloss Hall

Schloss Hall stands in the spa town of Bad Hall, a quiet market settlement in the Steyr-Land district of Upper Austria. A two-storey building with a mansard roof, it rises above the level street on a slight rise. The plastered walls show diamond-pointed quoins at the corners and narrow bands of rustication. A small tower clad in sheet metal crowns one corner, adding a modest skyline. The castle’s story begins in the 13th century when Wittelsbach rule probably left a small fortified house with underground escape passages still partly visible in the cellars. In 1644 it became a formally recognised noble residence after a citizen’s house was rebuilt. Emperor Ferdinand III pledged the place in 1654 to Count Maximilian von Trautmannsdorf, whose family kept it for two centuries through marriages to the Starhembergs, Paar and Gavre lines. Today the building houses a senior citizens’ home run by Caritas. During the Second World War it sheltered South Tyrolean evacuees and briefly lodged the Linz children’s hospital. The same wings that once echoed with those wartime uses now frame peaceful courtyards and sunlit corridors. The old structure, with its simple plasterwork and corner stones, quietly preserves the layered past of Hall.
