Schloss Wohmbrechts
Schloss Wohmbrechts stands in the village of Wohmbrechts, part of the municipality of Hergatz in the Lindau district of Swabia. The site first appears in records in 1269, and by the 13th and 14th centuries the local knights were already prominent figures. Wilhelm von Wohmbrechts became widely known for fighting alongside the King of Denmark against Sweden and Lithuania. He also served the Margrave of Brandenburg, the Count of Tyrol and the Duke of Bavaria in various wars. The castle was probably built during his lifetime. The castle passed to the free imperial city of Wangen in the late 16th century. From the 1770s it fell into disrepair and only a small remnant of the former stronghold remains today. The surviving earthworks and foundations give a sense of the building’s former size and position. The site is now an archaeological feature rather than a standing structure. Visitors can walk around the quiet grassy mound where the castle once stood. The remains lie on private farmland, but the area is accessible from public paths. A low bank marks the outline of the old moat, and information boards explain the site’s history. The surrounding countryside is gentle and pastoral, with views across fields and distant hills. The peaceful setting contrasts with the castle’s turbulent past.
