Natrun

The Natrun is a 1,253-metre mountain rising above the village of Maria Alm in Salzburg. Its long ridge runs west to east, with gentle slopes falling away on every side into the valley. The village centre lies to the west, the Urslau stream borders it to the south, and the Jufensattel pass leads east toward the Brimbachkögerl. Enterwinkl, a small district of Maria Alm, sits on the northern flank. At the summit a reservoir called the Prinzensee stores water for snow-making machines. The mountain has been developed for tourism and serves as a winter sports area. Two cable cars carry visitors up: the Natrunbahn from the west and the Sonnbergbahn from the south. In summer a single-track trail follows the western slope, while a network of walking routes circles the peak. One of these is the Nordalpenweg, a long-distance trail that crosses Austria from Lake Neusiedl to Lake Constance. Visitors find open meadows and panoramic views from the summit. The Prinzensee reservoir adds a small blue mirror to the landscape. The cable-car stations sit near the village, linking winter skiers and summer hikers to the slopes. The Singletrail offers a quiet route for mountain bikers in the warm months. Footpaths branch off in every direction, leading to quiet corners of the Steinernes Meer range.
