Gerstäcker Museum

The Gerstäcker-Museum once stood in Braunschweig, Lower Saxony. It occupied the old guard and kitchen house of Schloss Richmond, a small palace built in the late 18th century for Princess Augusta of Great Britain. The museum opened in 1982 to celebrate the life and writings of Friedrich Gerstäcker, a 19th-century author known for adventure stories set in distant lands. Gerstäcker himself spent part of his youth in Braunschweig before travelling widely. The building’s red-brick walls and white window frames gave it a plain but dignified look. The museum was run by the Friedrich-Gerstäcker-Gesellschaft, a local association devoted to keeping his literary legacy alive. Visitors could see manuscripts, first editions and personal items that showed how Gerstäcker organised his research trips. A special room displayed maps and sketches from his voyages to North and South America. The society also arranged talks and readings to introduce new readers to his work. After 34 years the museum closed in October 2016. Schloss Richmond remains open, its landscaped gardens still offering quiet walks among lime and chestnut trees. The guard house now houses a small café where visitors can rest. Though the exhibits are gone, the palace’s yellow façade and the gentle slope down to the Oker river recall the setting Gerstäcker once knew.
