Dovedale Baptist Church, Liverpool

Dovedale Baptist Church stands in the quiet Liverpool suburb of Mossley Hill, a Grade II listed building on Dovedale Road near the corners of Barndale Road and Olivedale Road. The church was designed by George and R. P. Baines and completed in 1906 in flint, red brick and terracotta, with a slate roof and Perpendicular-style tracery. In 1989 the southwest tower was shortened for safety, leaving its truncated form today. Inside, a crossing of quatrefoil columns supports four-centred arches around a central pulpit and immersion font. The organ, built in 1906 by Hill, Norman and Beard, still stands behind the pulpit. The building’s history reflects Liverpool’s religious life. It began as Wavertree Baptist Church, became independent in 1908, and in 1939 absorbed the congregation of Myrtle Street Baptist Church after their building was sold for the Liverpool Hospital for Cancer & Skin Diseases. Its final Baptist service was held in September 2018. The Baptist Union later sold it, and in 2020 Cornerstone Church Liverpool bought the property, reopening it in April 2021. Wayne Clarke, a BBC religious broadcaster, served as minister here from 1994 to 2011. Visitors approach through the gabled entrance on Dovedale Road, where a four-centred arch doorway is flanked by buttresses and two-light windows. Above sits a seven-light window with coloured glass showing Art Nouveau features. Side entrances lead to the attached hall, which has five-light windows in its gables. Sunday mornings now host services of song, sermons and prayer at 10.30 am. The church grounds sit between quiet residential streets, offering a calm setting for worship and community gatherings.
