St John the Baptist's Church, Broughton

St John the Baptist’s Church stands in the quiet village of Broughton, Lancashire, on a lane lined with stone cottages. The building is an active Anglican parish church, part of the diocese of Blackburn, and its benefice is shared with two churches in nearby Fulwood. The church is built of local sandstone under slate roofs, with a west tower, nave, chancel, organ chamber, and north porch. Its tower rises in three stages with diagonal buttresses and a small stair turret, while the nave shows Early English lancet windows between shallow buttresses. The chancel and organ chamber display Perpendicular tracery and an embattled parapet. The church’s history is written into its fabric. The tower bears the date 1533, while the rest of the church was rebuilt between 1823 and 1826 by Lancaster architect Robert Roper. In 1905–06 the Lancaster firm Austin and Paley added the chancel, vestries, and organ chamber and restored the interior, replacing box pews with benches. Inside, a brass chandelier from 1817 hangs beside a rough stone font of unknown date. The stained glass includes work by Powells of the 1930s, A. F. Erridge in 1952, Jane Gray in 1985, and Halton Stained Glass in 1999. The three-manual organ, built in 1906 by Henry Ainscough of Preston, was repaired and enlarged over the decades. Outside, the churchyard holds three Grade II listed features. A sundial with an octagonal pedestal and brass plate stands south of the church, while a mounting block and restored village stocks from the 18th century sit beside the south gate. The churchyard also contains war graves of three soldiers from the First World War and two from the Second. The building’s stonework, windows, and fittings together tell centuries of local craftsmanship and devotion.
