Parish church in Arbing

The Pfarrkirche Arbing stands on the Schlossberg in the village of Arbing, a short drive from Perg in Upper Austria’s Mühlviertel. The church is dedicated to Saint John the Baptist and belongs to the Perg deanery in the Diocese of Linz. It is protected as a listed monument. Nearby is Schloss Arbing, and the church tower rises above the rooftops as the village’s landmark. The church began as a Romanesque chapel in the 13th century and became a two-aisled Gothic hall in 1483. Its star-ribbed vaults and original late-Gothic glass survive intact. The 1520 relief of the Baptism of Christ above the south door shows the high point of local late-Gothic sculpture. The neogothic high altar of 1904 carries statues of Saints Florian and Theodor by Ludwig Linzinger. Inside, the east end holds a late-Gothic Madonna carved around 1510 from limewood. The organ, built by Josef Breinbauer between 1858 and 1861, was restored in the 2000s after decades of silence. Outside, the parish cemetery and the 2011 Franciscan chapel overlook the rolling Mühlviertel landscape.
