Stonyhurst College

Stonyhurst College stands on a Grade I listed estate in Lancashire’s Ribble Valley, beside the village of Hurst Green. The buildings trace back to a medieval hall built by the Shireburn family, whose descendants added ponds, avenues and gardens in the 14th and 15th centuries. In 1794 the Jesuits moved their expatriate English school from Liège to Stonyhurst Hall, which they enlarged to house hundreds of boys and girls. A preparatory school, St Mary’s Hall, sits on the same estate, educating children from three to eleven before they progress to the college. The college itself became fully co-educational in 1999 and now enrols around five hundred pupils aged eleven to eighteen. The college’s history reaches back to 1593, when Father Robert Persons founded a school at St Omer to teach English Catholics forbidden to study at home. After moves to Bruges and Liège, the community settled at Stonyhurst under Thomas Weld’s gift of the estate. Among its notable alumni are seven Victoria Cross holders, a New Zealand prime minister and a signatory of the American Declaration of Independence. The college also claims three saints, twelve blesseds and twenty-two martyrs among its former pupils. Its chapels contain relics of early Christian martyrs, including St Gordianus, brought from St Omer in the 19th century. Visitors walk through the medieval hall and along tree-lined avenues laid out by the Shireburns. St Peter’s Church and its five chapels offer quiet spaces for reflection, while the Rosary Garden holds a stone statue of the Virgin Mary. The estate’s public footpaths lead past the observatory and meteorological station once used by the Jesuits. The preparatory school’s Hodder House welcomes younger children in converted nursery buildings, and the college museum displays artefacts from its long history. Sports facilities, including an Olympic-standard all-weather pitch, remain open to local clubs and visiting teams.
