Schloss Agathenburg

Schloss Agathenburg stands on a steep Geest slope above the Elbmarsch near Stade in Lower Saxony. The small brick building was once the country seat of Count Hans Christoph von Königsmarck, a Swedish field commander in the Thirty Years’ War who named it after his wife Agathe. The plain three-storey block in Dutch Renaissance style has a central polygonal stair tower and sandstone portal, with little decoration beyond Blendarkaden on the courtyard side. The building survived a serious fire in 1921 that destroyed its interiors, yet retains notable features such as a 17th-century vaulted cellar on heavy columns and 18th-century tiled stoves. The first-floor hall still serves cultural events, while a modern lift now makes the whole house accessible. Outside, the former baroque garden was largely lost to railway construction, but a hedged kitchen garden recalls its parterre and terraces descend the slope toward the marsh. A contemporary sculpture park now occupies the wider grounds, begun in 1991 by the Kreissparkasse Stade. Rotating exhibitions select works by established and emerging artists for permanent display among dense planting and relict cemetery remains. The project aims to bring contemporary art to rural audiences through an open-air setting that avoids traditional vistas and lawns.
