Old Town of Bratislava
Bratislava’s Old Town stands on the west bank of the Danube, where the river bends and the Small Carpathians begin. The district covers just under ten square kilometres and is the smallest administrative area in Slovakia. It holds the medieval heart of the city, Bratislava Castle on its hill, and the Slavín war memorial. The western slopes are quieter, lined with embassies and detached houses. The eastern half is the busy centre with squares, universities and ministries. The Old Town contains more than a dozen churches, several palaces and fragments of the old city walls. St Martin’s Cathedral, Trinity Church and Michael’s Gate recall centuries of royal coronations and merchant life. The Grassalkovich Palace serves as the presidential seat, while the Primate’s Palace once hosted Napoleon’s peace treaty. Comenius University and the National Theatre show the district’s continuing role in education and the arts. The Danube waterfront holds the Chatam Sofer Memorial beside the castle hill. Visitors walk along Obchodná Street, the main shopping thoroughfare, and pause in Hviezdoslav Square. The Town Hall tower and Michael’s Gate mark the old commercial core. Horský Park offers tree-lined paths and views over the river. The castle grounds give sweeping vistas of the city and the surrounding hills. Along the embankment, modern buildings contrast with the preserved medieval skyline.
