Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Walk
The Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Walk is an 11-kilometre circular trail in central London. It winds through four royal parks—Kensington Gardens, Hyde Park, Green Park and St James’s Park—in a figure-eight shape. The route passes five places linked to Princess Diana’s life: Kensington Palace, Spencer House, Buckingham Palace, St James’s Palace and Clarence House. Ninety aluminium plaques mark the trail, each bearing a heraldic rose at its centre. Chancellor Gordon Brown, who chaired the memorial committee, called it one of the world’s finest urban parkland walks. The walk was built to honour Diana, Princess of Wales, who died in Paris in August 1997. It was funded by public contributions and completed without any members of the royal family at its opening. The figure-eight pattern lets walkers visit each site without retracing steps, so the route feels longer than its 11 kilometres. The plaques are spaced so that every mile or so a new rose appears, guiding walkers gently onward. Visitors find wide gravel paths shaded by plane and lime trees in summer. In Kensington Gardens the route passes the Sunken Garden, planted with white flowers in Diana’s memory. Near Buckingham Palace the trail runs alongside the Mall’s tree-lined avenue. Green Park offers quiet glades of birch and oak, while St James’s Park leads past pelicans and flowerbeds to Clarence House. The walk ends where it began, back at Kensington Palace’s golden gates.
