Hessian State Museum

The Hessisches Landesmuseum stands at Brüder-Grimm-Platz on the edge of Kassel’s centre, where Wilhelmshöher Allee begins. Built between 1908 and 1913 by Theodor Fischer, the building recalls late-Renaissance hessian monuments yet follows Friedrich Schinkel’s functional five-wing plan with two inner courtyards. A central tower gives the façade its landmark silhouette. The museum reopened in 2016 after eight years of restoration, having survived the Second World War with only minor damage while much of Kassel was destroyed. In the immediate post-war years it housed the Alte Meister picture gallery until the Neue Galerie and Wilhelmshöhe Palace were rebuilt. The collections span more than 6 000 objects across three floors and 3 800 square metres. Early finds from Landgraf Karl’s 1704 excavations at Gudensberg form the core of the pre- and early-history section, covering every period from 800 000 BC to the early Middle Ages. The applied-arts holdings include princely silver, porcelain from Kassel and Meißen, Meissen and Chinese export wares, plus Bauhaus design and post-modern pieces. The folk-culture collection, Hesse’s largest, documents costume, pre-industrial work, domestic life and toys from the 19th century to the present. Visitors move through light, modern galleries arranged by theme. The prehistoric displays show tools, weapons and burial objects from every epoch. Applied-arts rooms display medieval altarpieces beside baroque silver and 20th-century Bauhaus furniture. Folk-culture exhibits include regional dress, hand tools and historic toys. Temporary shows such as the 2017 display of 16th-century stove plates with biblical scenes add fresh perspectives. The building itself, with its two courtyards and central tower, remains a calm setting for discovery.
