Derby Museum and Art Gallery

Derby Museum and Art Gallery stands in the centre of Derby, a city in the East Midlands. It occupies a building designed by Richard Knill Freeman and opened in 1879 beside the Central Library. The museum began in 1836 as a private society housed in Full Street Public Baths, funded by members’ subscriptions. Early donors included Dr Forrester and Colonel George Gawler, who gave minerals and stuffed birds. In 1839 a major exhibition at the Mechanics’ Institute brought many items that later entered the museum’s collection. The society moved to the Athenaeum in 1840 and grew steadily under figures like Llewellyn Jewitt and Alexander Croall. The museum matters because it holds over three hundred sketches and thirty-four oil paintings by Joseph Wright of Derby. Wright’s works, such as The Alchymist in Search of the Philosopher’s Stone, use light and shadow to explore the shift from faith to science. The gallery also displays more than a thousand items connected to the Lunar Society, whose members included Erasmus Darwin, Matthew Boulton and Joseph Priestley. A painting like A Philosopher Lecturing on the Orrery reflects lectures given in Derby in 1762 by James Ferguson. These works show how Derby became a key place in the Enlightenment and the birth of modern science. Inside, visitors find galleries devoted to Joseph Wright’s paintings and Derby porcelain. There are also displays of archaeology, natural history, geology, military objects and world cultures. The building itself was extended in 1964 using money left by collector Alfred E. Goodey. Parts of the museum were refurbished in 2010–11. The collections grew from early donations and exhibitions, including items once owned by Joseph Strutt. Today the museum offers a view of Derby’s role in science, industry and art across the centuries.
