Fernmeldeturm Waghäusel

The Fernmeldeturm Waghäusel stands in the Wiesental district of Waghäusel, a town in the Karlsruhe region. Built in 1971, it rises 131 metres above the surrounding landscape. This reinforced-concrete tower belongs to the FMT 6 series, one of five identical structures planned in the 1960s by engineers Fritz Leonhardt and Erwin Heinle for the former German postal service. Its three platforms sit at 65, 68 and 84 metres, offering different levels of access to technical floors. The lower level once housed a staff room, workshop and storage, while the upper technical floor contained the communications equipment. Designed for on-site staff, the tower includes generous work and rest areas for the small team that once maintained it. Visitors find a plain concrete shaft with narrow service staircases and small landings. The highest platform gives a wide view over the Rhine plain and the distant Black Forest. The building’s utilitarian style reflects its original purpose as a secure relay point rather than a public landmark.
