Wertheimerhaus

The Wertheimerhaus stands in Eisenstadt, the capital of Burgenland in Austria. Built in 1719, this two-storey building features a round corner turret. It occupies the corner of Unterbergstraße and Alexander-Wolf-Gasse. The Esterházy family funded the house to reward Samson Wertheimer for his services. Wertheimer, born in 1658, died in 1724. The house passed to the Wolf family in 1875. They used it for private apartments, servant quarters and the headquarters of their wine business. After 75 years under the Wolfs, the Austrian Red Cross bought the building in 1945. In 1979 it became home to the Austrian Jewish Museum. Visitors find the museum inside the Wertheimerhaus. Exhibits tell the story of Jewish life in Burgenland. The building’s original layout and features remain visible. Its location in Eisenstadt’s old town adds to the visit. The round turret and corner position give the exterior its distinctive shape.
