St Tysoi's Church

St Tysoi’s Church stands in the Monmouthshire village of Llansoy, south of the settlement. It is built in the Perpendicular style from Old Red Sandstone and was listed at Grade I in 1955. The tower appears to date from the early 19th century, while the rest of the building is medieval. John Pollard Seddon carried out light restoration work in the 19th century. Inside, a 15th-century barrel roof and matching fittings remain from the same period. The church is worth the journey for its fine medieval fabric and later stained glass. Two notable windows were added in the 1920s and later in the 20th century. A vivid Genesis window by Geoffrey Robinson is especially striking. The Grade I listing recognises the building’s outstanding architectural importance. Its quiet setting adds to the sense of stepping back in time. Visitors find a simple nave and chancel under the old barrel roof. The contemporary fittings from the 15th century sit alongside later furnishings. Bright stained glass throws coloured light across the walls. The tower rises at the west end, its early 19th-century form contrasting with the older stonework. The churchyard slopes gently down to the fields beyond Llansoy village.
