The Pfannspitze stands at 2,678 metres on the border between Austria and Italy, forming one of the highest peaks in the Carnic Alps. Its summit straddles the frontier, offering a clear divide between the two countries. The mountain’s slopes rise above the Winklertal valley near Kartitsch, a small village in eastern Tirol. During the First World War the ridge became part of the front line, leaving behind trenches and buildings still visible today. Remains of military cemeteries and chapels mark where soldiers once stood. Now the peak draws hikers who follow the long-distance Karnische Höhenweg along the main alpine crest.
The route to the top is graded as moderate, with a short exposed section on the south-west ridge before the final climb. Those who reach the summit are rewarded by sweeping views across the Alps. Lake Obstanser See lies below, its waters reflecting the surrounding ranges. The hut Obstanserseehütte sits beside the lake, offering shelter and refreshment. On clear days the panorama stretches to the Großglockner and Großvenediger massifs. The Sexten Dolomites and the Große Kinigat appear to the south, completing a grand alpine vista.
The trail begins in Kartitsch and follows the Winklertal valley upwards. Walkers pass through alpine meadows before entering rugged high-country terrain. The final ridge demands careful footing and a head for heights. Once on top, the sense of space and distance is striking. The border line runs across the summit plateau, a quiet reminder of the mountain’s past. From here the Karnische Höhenweg continues east, inviting further exploration of the frontier peaks.
