Alum Bay

Alum Bay lies on the western tip of the Isle of Wight, a narrow strip of coast where coloured sands rise almost straight from the pebble beach. The cliffs show layers of soft sand and clay tilted nearly vertical by ancient mountain-building movements, their iron oxides glowing in reds, yellows and purples. Below the cliffs the beach is reached either by chairlift from the amusement park above or by a winding path through Alum Bay Chine, a wooded ravine that once carried alum miners down to the shore. The bay’s sands and clays form part of a protected marine zone and a site of special scientific interest, recognised for their geological importance. Nearby West High Down is capped by white Cretaceous chalk that contrasts with the vivid colours of the bay. The bay’s colourful cliffs have drawn visitors for centuries, first for alum mining in the 16th century and later for the coloured-sand ornaments and pictures that became fashionable in Victorian times. Guglielmo Marconi chose Alum Bay in 1897 to erect a 40-metre antenna and test ship-to-shore radio links, eventually spanning twenty miles to stations in Bournemouth and Poole. Today the amusement park on the clifftop offers fairground rides, souvenir shops and a café, while boat trips leave constantly to circle the chalk stacks known as the Needles. A chairlift carries holidaymakers down to the beach in summer, or they can walk the shaded Chine path that widens into a clay ravine. On the beach itself the pebbles are scattered with fragments of the coloured strata that once filled glass vials and sand paintings. The Needles Park still provides bottles filled with freshly fallen sand, though digging the cliffs is now forbidden to protect the site. From the shore boats regularly set out for the Needles, passing the place where Marconi’s early experiments once stood.
