UCL Medical School stands on three linked campuses in central and north London. University College Hospital sits in Bloomsbury, the Royal Free Hospital occupies a leafy site in Hampstead, and the Whittington Hospital is reached from Archway. These places are joined by Great Ormond Street Hospital, Moorfields Eye Hospital and the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery at Queen’s Square. The school itself was formed in 2008 from earlier mergers, beginning with the Middlesex Hospital’s medical school in 1746 and University College Hospital’s foundation in 1834. The school is one of the largest in the UK, taking 334 new undergraduates each year. It ranks among the top five medical schools in the country and among the top ten worldwide. Its six-year MBBS programme leads to a BSc honours degree and is taught across three main teaching hospitals. The school also runs research institutes in cancer, neurology, orthopaedics and child health. A visitor finds modern clinical skills suites and lecture theatres at University College Hospital. The Royal Free Hospital campus has lecture halls and seminar rooms set among gardens. The Whittington Hospital site holds small-group teaching rooms and a library. Students also study at specialist centres like Moorfields Eye Hospital and the Heart Hospital.
