Langes Schöberl

The Langes Schöberl is a 2,831-metre peak in the Schober Group of the Hohe Tauern range. It stands in the municipality of Ainet, in Austria’s East Tyrol, above the valley of the Leibnitzbach. The mountain’s jagged ridges and rounded dome rise south of the Staniskascharte pass. To the northwest lie the Leibnitzer Rotspitzen, while to the southeast the Felshorn Kleines Schöberl and the Schoberlacke lake sit below its slopes. Climbers reach the summit from the Hochschoberhütte, following the path north toward the Staniskascharte. From there the final climb can be made along the short North Ridge, graded II, or by the exposed South Ridge, graded III. Both routes demand sure-footedness and a head for heights, but reward walkers with views across the Schober Group’s high valleys. On the summit ridge the panorama stretches from the Venediger peaks to the Dolomites. The steep walls of the Leibnitzbach gorge drop away below, while the Staniskascharte pass frames the Grossglockner in the distance. The air is thin and clear, and the only sounds are the wind and the occasional jingle of a chamois bell.
