Rathaus Neunkirchen

The Neunkirchen town hall stands on the main square in the heart of the town in Lower Austria. Its late-Historicist predecessor was built between 1889 and 1891 on the south-east side of the square. A fire in 1945 destroyed the old complex. Between 1948 and 1950 Leo Kammel’s plans guided the reconstruction of a three-storey town hall on the same footprint. The rebuilt façade features a double gable and a small tower above. The exterior decoration is striking. Fritz Weninger and Karl Steiner painted a large sgraffito showing industry and trade alongside the granting of market and minting rights in 1150. The scene captures the town’s early privileges and economic life. The listed building remains a protected monument today. Inside, visitors find municipal offices arranged over three floors. The main staircase leads up to council chambers and meeting rooms. Outside, the main square offers cafés and shops, with the town hall forming the centrepiece of daily life. The surrounding streets still carry the rhythm of a Lower Austrian market town.
