Elan Valley

The Elan Valley lies west of Rhayader in Powys, a stretch of lakes and farmland sometimes called the Welsh Lake District. It covers 180 square kilometres of water and countryside. The valley holds the Elan Reservoirs and Elan Village, a planned settlement built by architect Herbert Tudor Buckland as part of the same water scheme. Elan Village is Wales’ only purpose-built Arts and Crafts model village. Over eighty per cent of the valley is protected as Sites of Special Scientific Interest for its wildlife and habitats. A cycle loop, the Elan Valley Trail, runs from Rhayader around the reservoirs and links to part of National Cycle Route 81. The valley’s scenery draws visitors for its wide skies and quiet paths. It became an International Dark Sky Park in 2015, recognised for its clear night skies. The reservoirs supply water to Birmingham and the Midlands, a project begun in the 19th century. The Elan Valley Railway once carried materials to build the dams and now forms part of local walks. Nearby the River Elan winds through wooded gorges that shelter rare plants and birds. Visitors find broad reservoir edges framed by rolling hills and wooded slopes. The cycle trail offers flat, traffic-free riding with views across the water. Elan Village’s stone cottages and Arts and Crafts buildings stand among gardens and orchards. Signposted paths lead to viewpoints over the dams and along the river. On clear nights the valley’s dark skies reveal the Milky Way and meteor showers. The surrounding farmland and moorland provide longer walks through open landscapes.
