Schleifmühle Schwerin

The Schleifmühle Schwerin is an 18th-century stone-grinding mill driven by an undershot waterwheel. It stands beside the outlet of the Faule See in the Ostorf district, close to the gardens of Schwerin Palace. The mill forms part of a technical heritage site and includes the former home of the stone grinder. The mill is worth visiting for its working machinery and the story of its long service. Between 1845 and 1857 it supplied stone for the rebuilding of Schwerin Palace under Hofbaumeister Georg Adolph Demmler. After falling into disuse in the early 20th century, it was restored in the mid-1980s and fitted with a new 4.5-metre waterwheel in 2000. Today it operates as a museum from April to November. Visitors find the original grinding equipment in action and displays about the mill’s history. Outside stands a 1920s stone saw that shows how the craft developed. The adjoining house often hosts exhibitions, especially during German Mill Day. The ensemble offers a quiet corner where the past can still be heard turning.
