Heltersberg Observation Tower

The Aussichtsturm Heltersberg stands on the western edge of Heltersberg, a village in the Südwestpfalz district of Rheinland-Pfalz. It rises on a broad saddle of hills between the Schwarzbach and Haselbach valleys, surrounded by mixed woodland. The tower is built of local sandstone and reaches just over ten metres, giving the name ‘Türmche auf der Mauer’ locally. From its platform visitors look out over the village rooftops and across to the higher peaks of the Pfälzerwald. The tower is worth the journey for the wide views it offers without a long climb. It sits at the edge of the 81-hectare Hundsberg core zone, a protected area within the Pfälzerwald Biosphere Reserve. Nearby rock formations such as the Rappersborner Felsen and Seelenfelsen are marked as natural monuments. Geologically the region is shaped by Voltziensandstein, a soft red sandstone that underlies the whole landscape. Inside the tower a short flight of stairs leads to the viewing platform. From here the eye travels over the village, the wooded ridges of the Kleine Hundsberg and Dinkelsberg, and on clear days to the Hahnenkopf at 518 metres. The surrounding forest paths connect to the circular trails of the Naturpark Pfälzerwald, where waymarkers such as Ritterstein 84 guide walkers to viewpoints and ancient sites.
