Mozarteum

The Mozarteum stands on Schwarzstraße in Salzburg’s Old Town, beside the Salzach River. The building complex, opened in 1914, houses the International Mozarteum Foundation and two concert halls. The Great Hall seats about 800 and is a key venue for the Salzburg Festival. The smaller Vienna Hall, on the first floor, holds around 200 listeners for chamber music. Nearby, the Mirabell Gardens begin just east of the site, while the New Mozarteum campus lies behind them. The foundation’s Mozart Library is one of the world’s largest Mozart collections. It contains roughly 35,000 books and over 6,000 musical scores. The main building also includes teaching rooms for the Mozarteum University Salzburg. A Jugendstil organ built in 1914 once stood in the Great Hall, though only its façade remains today. A newer organ, the Propter Homines, replaced it in 2010 and is still in use. Visitors find a quiet urban setting with elegant interiors and fine acoustics. The Great Hall’s glass foyer, completed in 2022, now links the two building sections. A historic house once linked to The Magic Flute once stood in the Bastion Garden but has since moved to the Mozart House. The Mozarteum’s golden inscription above the entrance quotes Mozart’s words in neon tubes.
