Burg Rothenfels

Burg Rothenfels stands above the Main in Unterfranken, a medieval hilltop fortress built around 1150 by Markward II of Grumbach. Its massive bergfried still dominates the skyline, a silent witness to eight centuries of change. The castle sits between Würzburg and Aschaffenburg, offering sweeping views over the river valley. The site became nationally important in the 20th century when Romano Guardini led it from 1927 to 1939. Rudolf Schwarz, the noted architect, designed the chapel’s fittings with a team from Aachen’s art school. After 1945 Heinrich Kahlefeld revived its work, attracting thousands to Easter and Pentecost meetings. Visitors find a modern education centre inside the old walls. Three dining rooms, ten seminar rooms and a 300-seat Rittersaal cater for choirs, school groups and conferences. The chapel retains its original liturgical furnishings, while the outer ward and palaces have been carefully restored. Guests walk the same paths once trodden by Quickborn youth and later by post-war educators.
