Gedenkstätte Seelower Höhen

The Gedenkstätte Seelower Höhen stands on a plateau above Seelow in Brandenburg’s Märkisch-Oderland district. It remembers the fierce April 1945 battle for the Seelow Heights, the last major Soviet assault before Berlin. A towering statue by Lew Kerbel and Wladimir Zigal was raised within months of the fighting and unveiled in November 1945. Below it, a low building clad in dark timber logs was added in 1972 to house the DDR’s reinterpretation of the site. The plateau also holds a field of red-granite graves for more than seven thousand Soviet soldiers, their care later passed from Soviet commands to local hands. The place matters because it records a turning point in the final weeks of the Second World War. In five months of 1945 Soviet forces under Marshal Schukow broke German defences here and opened the road to Berlin. The DDR later shaped the site into a political monument, stressing the heroism of the Red Army and minimising other perspectives. Visitors today see how that narrative shifted after 1990, when new exhibits included Wehrmacht soldiers and civilian experience. A double timeline now guides visitors from 1941 through to the site’s own history. Visitors walk past two sandstone steles that frame the ascent, their metal bowls once used for eternal flames. Five large weapons stand behind them: a 76-mm gun, a 120-mm mortar, a 152-mm howitzer, a Stalin organ launcher and a T-34/85 tank. Inside the museum, 200 square metres of texts, films and interactive stations trace the Oder bridgeheads, the battle itself and the changing meanings of the memorial. A separate room shows the 30-minute film ‘Battlefield before Berlin’ alongside a three-dimensional relief map of the Heights. Outside, the cemetery’s red stones stretch across the plateau, while a quiet terrace looks out over the Oderbruch plain toward Küstrin and the old command post on Reitweiner Höhe.
