Clyde Wind Farm

Clyde Wind Farm stands near Abington in South Lanarkshire, Scotland. It spreads across land on either side of the M74 motorway, forming a large renewable energy site. The farm’s first stage has 152 turbines built by Scottish and Southern Energy. Later, 54 more turbines were added in an extension. Together they can power around 200,000 homes. The wind farm is important for Scotland’s renewable energy strategy. Construction began in 2009 and finished in 2012 at a cost of £600 million. The towers were supplied by Welcon Towers Ltd from Campbeltown. The project was opened by First Minister Alex Salmond in 2012. The extension was approved in 2014 and completed in 2017. Visitors see rows of tall white turbines stretching across open hills. The site offers wide views of the surrounding countryside. A road runs between the turbines on both sides of the motorway. The wind farm shows how modern technology harnesses natural energy. It stands as a working example of Scotland’s shift to cleaner power.
