Burg Dielheim

Burg Dielheim once stood on the Teufelskopf hill above Dielheim village in the Kraichgau region. Built around 1380 by Conz Mönch von Rosenberg, it was a small spur castle designed to protect his local authority. The fortress resembled a fortified farm rather than a grand medieval palace. After two centuries the isolated site fell into disuse and only the field name ‘Burg’ survives today. Conz Mönch acquired half of Dielheim’s land from the Bishop of Speyer, turning the hilltop into a strategic lookout. Archaeologists recognise the earthworks and foundations beneath the meadows. Visitors walk quiet woodland paths to the hilltop clearing where the castle once rose. A low mound and shallow ditch mark the former walls, while views stretch across the vineyards and fields of the Kraichgau. The site offers a quiet reminder of a local noble’s brief power in the late 14th century.
