Lessingtheater

The Lessingtheater stands in Wolfenbüttel, a town in Lower Saxony known for its long theatrical tradition. Built in 1909, it replaced an earlier court theatre founded in 1592, making it part of Germany’s oldest continuous theatrical history. The building itself is a fine example of early 20th-century design, combining Jugendstil and neoclassical elements. It was planned by architect Otto Rasche and opened with Lessing’s *Nathan the Wise*. Unlike many theatres, it never suffered damage in the two world wars. The theatre’s survival is remarkable given its age and the challenges it faced. By 2007 it no longer met fire safety standards and suffered from water seeping into its cellars. A major renovation between 2010 and 2013 cost nearly 19 million euros, funded by multiple public and private sources. The work included lowering the cellar, installing a new drainage system and reinforcing the structure with steel and concrete. A modern sprinkler system was added to the 20-metre tower, a first in Germany. Inside, the theatre now offers a more flexible space. The foyer and gallery have been opened up with glass and steel extensions, while the cellar provides storage, technical rooms and dressing areas. The stage can be adapted for different kinds of performances, and the auditorium seats fewer people but with better sightlines. Around 170 events are held each year, continuing the tradition of touring productions rather than a resident company. The restored building keeps its historic exterior while providing modern facilities within.
