RömerWelt

The RömerWelt is an experience museum at the start of the Upper Germanic-Rhaetian Limes near Rheinbrohl in the Neuwied district. It sits on about 6 000 m² of ground close to the Arienheller exit of the B 42. In Roman times the Obergermanisch-Raetischer Limes and the Niedergermanischer Limes met here, marking the empire’s northern frontier. The main building holds a large exhibition room with many Roman and Germanic artefacts and panels. Outside are a herb garden, a reconstructed Roman pile-driver and crane, and a 50 m stretch of wall, ditch and palisade. Behind the workshops stands a contubernium building with a play area, a fishing display, a reconstructed sleeping room and armoury of an auxiliary unit, and a larger event space. Near the bakery with its Roman hearth and ovens is an archery range, and a playground is provided for children. Regular events run from March to mid-November, including Roman Days in May and monthly themed days with workshops on stone-working, metal-casting, smithing, glass-bead making and glass-blowing. Since 2022 the site has hosted the International Reenactment Fair each April. The whole site is fully accessible, and the RömerWeltWeg, a 9 km circular walk, begins here, leading along the Limes to the Wp 1/8 watch-tower trail. A reconstructed watch-tower, Wp 1/1, stands nearby on the Rhine bank. The museum is run by the Caput Limitis Foundation, set up in 2005.
