Schloss Herringhausen

Schloss Herringhausen is a Baroque water castle in the Herringhausen district of Lippstadt, North Rhine-Westphalia. The present building was constructed between 1720 and 1730 on the site of a 16th-century knightly estate. The first owner was Rembert von Schorlemer, and the expansion into a grand residence began under Leopold Anton Wilhelm von Schorlemer. The architect Justus Wehmer from Hildesheim likely provided the plans, while stone masons Bartholomäus Rabaliatti and later Valentin Springer oversaw the work. The two-storey main house has a mansard roof, pedimented central projections and a double staircase. Inside, elaborate stucco ceilings and a library survive from the 18th century. Symmetrically placed outbuildings frame the manor, with two pavilions to the south and a gatehouse closing the approach. A moat once surrounded the complex, though much of it has been filled in. The estate remains in the hands of the Schorlemer family and is farmed on a large scale. In the 19th century it was home to Burghard von Schorlemer-Alst, a notable resident of the region. Today the farmland covers 350 hectares, and visitors can walk past the moat remnants and view the symmetrical layout of house and pavilions.
