Lowestoft War Memorial Museum

The Lowestoft War Memorial Museum stands in Sparrows Nest Gardens in the north of Lowestoft, Suffolk. It occupies part of the Royal Naval Patrol Service’s former World War II headquarters. The site once held a 19th-century summer residence owned by Robert Sparrow. The gardens became a public venue with concerts and, in 1913, a 1,300-seat Pavilion Theatre. The museum building itself was added when the Royal Navy took over the site in 1939. The museum honours Lowestoft people who served in both world wars. It contains a small chapel and a roll of honour for civilians killed by enemy action. Exhibits include wartime defences, photographs of bomb damage, and personal stories of servicemen and women. Volunteers run the museum and open it on selected weekends and school holidays. The building was restored in the 1990s after decades of neglect. Visitors find a quiet museum with wartime artefacts and photographs. The small chapel provides a space for reflection. Outside, the gardens remain a peaceful setting beside the town’s north shore. The former Royal Naval base’s brick and concrete extensions now house the displays. A café in the complex offers a place to rest after exploring the exhibits.
