Worth School

Worth School stands on a 500-acre estate in the Sussex countryside, sharing its grounds with Worth Abbey, a Benedictine monastery. The school began in 1933 when monks from Downside Abbey moved a junior boys’ school to the Paddockhurst estate. In 1959 it became an independent senior school for boys aged 13 to 18, later opening to day pupils in the 1990s. Girls joined the sixth form in 2008 and younger years in 2010, making it fully co-educational. The school belongs to the Benedictine tradition, one of three such independent schools in the UK. The school has hosted major events, including the first International Conference on Benedictine Education in 1999. Racing driver Henry Surtees, a former pupil, is commemorated by a social centre and a fundraising swim. The Abbey Church, designed by Francis Pollen and refurbished by Thomas Heatherwick Studios, won a restoration award in 2011. A new boys’ boarding house, St Bede’s, opened in 2012 and received a Sussex Heritage Trust Award. The school also built a pedestrian bridge to link its site with playing fields across a busy road.
